Walter Sisulu University

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) came into existence in 2005 through the merger of Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon, and University of Transkei. It occupies a unique position to contribute significantly to the government's emphasis on rural development. With a student body of around 30,000 and nearly 1,800 staff members, WSU operates across four campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City (East London), and Komani. Through its strategic location and comprehensive university status, WSU is well-equipped to address local and national developmental needs by conducting research, engaging with communities, and offering over 170 academic programs.

WSU primarily caters to the disadvantaged youth from impoverished and working-class backgrounds in the region, who would otherwise lack access to higher education. About two-thirds of WSU students receive financial assistance from the government through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Given its location and target market, the university acts as a gateway institution, providing educational opportunities to the rural, economically disadvantaged, and working-class population in the area. WSU has enabled thousands of young individuals to pursue higher education, nurturing future leaders across various industries.

Positioned strategically as a comprehensive university, WSU encompasses the following key features:

  1. Diverse range of academic programs.
  2. Vertical and horizontal articulation facilitating student mobility.
  3. Work-related qualifications spanning from certificates to full degrees.
  4. Service to the community, businesses, and industries.
  5. Innovative research focused on problem-solving.
  6. Lifelong learning opportunities.
  7. Flexibility in building relationships with community, civic, government, business, and industry partners to foster local and regional development.
